Welcome to the Drama Department

Miss L Jack - Head of Drama

What is Drama at the Grange School ?

A Drama Education

Primarily, drama is taught at Key Stage 3 and 4 as an art form; a practical activity and an intellectual discipline. It encourages students' artistic creativity and involves the understanding of form, genre, and style as well as the creation of imagined characters and situations, which are enacted within a designed space.

An Education through Drama

Drama at the Grange School is also a process, which enables communication between individuals, exploring person-to-person experiences. It involves the exploration, representation and development of imagination and sensitivity, and the expression of thoughts and feelings in role-play and dramatic form.

THE AIMS OF LEARNING IN DRAMA

Drama provides opportunities for:

1. Personal and Social Development

2. Cultural and Artistic Knowledge, Skills and Understanding

3. Cross Curricular Learning

THE PLACE OF DRAMA IN THE NATIONAL CURRICULUM

As there is no National Curriculum for drama, the curriculum has been organised by the Head of Subject in accordance with components of the English National Curriculum, guidance from the Arts Council and the National Literacy Strategy.

Key Stage 3

The Key Stage 3 Drama Curriculum

Drama is taught as a subject in its own right within the curriculum. Key Stage Three students attend lessons on a rotational basis (One half-term per term in Drama and in Dance) in one hour sessions, once a week.

Year 7 - Beginning Drama

The scheme of work focuses on building a body of skills and knowledge and using this in a range of contexts.

Year 8 - Drama to Explore

The scheme of work enables students to develop and expand their existing skills and knowledge, and particularly to explore a range of selected issues.

Year 9 - Drama to Create

The scheme of work encourages students to refine their skills and knowledge to create meaningful drama with attention to content and form.

Students will also complete a BTEC Level 1 Award in Performing Arts, some of whom will specialise in Drama.

Key Stage 4

Students will study the BTEC Performing Arts (Acting). This qualification will allow them to look into different areas of the performing arts (through the focus of acting), lead them to a whole range of professions and sectors and allow them to explore their creativity in a variety of ways.

The BTEC Certificate is a vocational or work-related qualification. This does not mean that it will give students all they need to do a job, but they will have the oppportunity to gain specific knowledge, understanding and skills that are relevant to their future career.

We are offering three pathways in Performing Arts (Acting)

•  Level 1 Certificate (10 months - Year 9)

•  Level 2 First Certificate (10 months - Year 10)

•  Level 2 Extended Certificate (20 months - Year 10 and 11)
