THE AIMS OF LEARNING IN FRENCH

 

Key Stage 3

Métro is a French course which is a topic based approach combined with grammatical progression.  it is fully differentiated with opportunities for assessment at regular intervals.

Topics include family, free time, daily routine, food, Paris , news, geography of France and health.

 

Key Stage 4

 

The French Department offers a two year course providing complete preparation to GCSE.  All topics of GCSE are covered including integrated grammar explanations and activities.

Coursework is offered as an alternative to a written exam at the end of Year 11.  The final examination (WJEC) provides opportunities for students to sit either at Foundation or Higher levels in each skill area.

Topics include health, world of work, education and the world around us.

UNIT 1 – LISTENING  20%

Written paper:     approx 35 mins (F)

                             approx 45 mins (H)

 

UNIT 2 – SPEAKING 30%

Controlled assessment (untiered)

2 tasks:      structured conversation

                   presentation and discussion

 

UNIT 3 – READING 20%

Written paper:     approx 35 mins (F)

                             approx 45 mins (H)

 

UNIT 4 – WRITING 30%

Controlled assessment (untiered)

2 written tasks from different contexts

 

 

ACQUIRING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE TARGET LANGUAGE


pupils should be taught -

the principles and interrelationship of sounds and writing in the TL

the grammar of the TL and how to apply it

how to express themselves using a range of vocabulary and structures

  1. DEVELOPING LANGUAGE SKILLS

    pupils should be taught -

    how to listen carefully for gist and detail
    correct pronunciation and intonation
    how to ask and answer questions
    how to initiate and develop conversations
    how to vary the TL to suit context, audience and purpose
    how to adapt language they already know for different contexts
    strategies for dealing with the unpredictable
    techniques for scanning and skimming written texts for information
    how to summarise and report the main points of spoken or written texts, using notes where appropriate
    how to redraft their writing to improve its accuracy and presentation, including the use of ICT
  2. DEVELOPING LANGUAGE LEARNING SKILLS

    pupils should be taught -

    techniques for memorising words, phrases and short extracts
    how to use context and other clues to interpret meaning
    to use their knowledge of English or another language when learning the TL
    how to use dictionaries and other reference materials appropriately and effectively
    how to develop their independence in learning and using the TL
  3. DEVELOPING CULTURAL AWARENESS - pupils should be taught about different countries and cultures by

    working with authentic materials in the TL
    communicating with native speakers
    considering their own culture and comparing it with the cultures of the countries and communities where the TL is spoken
    considering the experiences and perspectives of people in these countries and communities

 

 

  1. BREADTH OF STUDY - pupils should be taught the knowledge, skills and understanding through

    communicating in the TL in pairs, groups and with the teacher
    using everyday classroom events as an opportunity for spontaneous speech
    expressing and discussing personal feelings and opinions
    producing and responding to different types of spoken and written language, including texts produced using ICT
    using a range of resources for accessing and communicating information
    using the TL imaginatively and creatively
    listening, reading or viewing for personal interest and enjoyment, as well as for information
    using the TL for real purposes
    working in a variety of contexts, including everyday activities, personal and social life, the world around us, the world of work and the international world
